I haven’t made a multi-specific abuse post in ages, but this is something I’ve seen so often that I have to make note of it: beware any multiple that, when caught in misbehavior, simply retires/kills/throws the relevant headmates under the bus, gets new ones, and continues the exact same shitty behavior.

Hello, friend! Are you exhausted by plural piss-fights about tedious minutiae nobody outside a very tiny subculture knows or cares about? Does trying to explain this soul-shriveling nonsense to others only make them stare at you in bewildered incomprehension? Have you felt like you personally are making things worse for multis everywhere, just by existing?

If so, this one’s for you!

"System" in the plural slang sense is used as a stand-alone noun (or, less often in my circles, in the specific phrasing, "a multiple system" or "plural system"). People will ask us, "are you a system?" or "have you heard about systems?" In this context, a "system" roughly describes the gestalt entity that is formed by the mix of a plural's vessel, internal populace, headspace, and other internal forces at work.

So far, here is my timeline for the use of "system" in a plural context.

EDIT AND UPDATE: Plurals have been using it since 1990, and even the most parsimonious estimate shows it was used by non-MPD plurals by 1992. )

Some plural links and info:
  • Massively belated announcement, but ATW, the author of got parts? an insider's guide to managing life effectively with DID has passed on, and gotparts.org now seems to be permanently down. From the Wayback Machine: "A.T.W. died of complications related to cancer in 2016 at the age of 55. She is dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.  Got Parts is her durable legacy and we hope you have enjoyed sharing her journey in this book."
  • Dragonheart Collective put out a 27-page paper on Safety in Alterhuman Spaces, covering warning signs and poisonous behavior patterns in otherkin, fictionkin, plural, and other related subcultures. Totally worth a read! (Also check out their projects page; they've been up to a lot of neat stuff recently!) (Thanks, Hungry Ghosts, for telling us about this!)

Wondershocked

Wondershock/Wondershocked, AKA myprotagonist (and possibly delatia), made a paper/website on soulbonders/fictionkin called "Enchanted Subcultures" that led to a lot of plurals being put on Encyclopedia Dramatica, and the subsequent lockdown of the Livejournal soulbonding community.  They also hoped to make a movie based on the infamous "FF7 House." Despite claiming to be singlet, they stated themselves to be plural themselves in private IM conversations, and may have also controlled a completely separate plural sockpuppet account.

This is kinda an addendum to Your Princess is in Another Headspace.  I kinda tried to discuss both topics together, and it was just too scattered and too much.  So body hopping goes here, in much shorter form!

Body hopping headmates (also sometimes called intersystem travel, or system hopping) is pretty self-explanatory: it's when a headmate jumps from one system to another, be it temporarily ("I'm here to celebrate your birthday!"), permanently ("You people suck, I'm leaving!"), or as a regular trading back and forth.  At its furthest extreme, we've encountered folks who claim that they're one system with multiple bodies. (We'll explain why that tends to be an especially bad idea further down.)

Summary: the pitfalls of plurals seeking bookend headmates in other plurals--for example, the Princess Peach to their Mario. "Imagine book-ended twins.  Outwardly different, but joined in every way possible at all times..." Crane and Naifeh, How Loathsome, pg. 73
Word Count: 3700
Notes: This was the unequivocal winner of the Patreon story poll this month! A glossary of terms is here; cited sources are at bottom. This is part of a series on plural social anti-patterns, and it’s inspired by conversations we had with (among others) Amorpha, Veterans, Rhymers, and Plures.

If you hang in certain multi circles long enough, you may hear warnings against systems who claim to have matching headmates to yours, or who claim your headmates travel into their own system. In other words, if you have Mario as a headmate, this other plural would claim that he visits their own headspace, or that they have Princess Peach or Luigi, or both or more. (Due to the clunkiness of the terminology, for the sake of convenience, I’m going to hereafter label this phenomenon “your princess is in another headspace” and conversely, the matching or shared headmates as “bookend headmates”; see endnote)

But a blanket beware doesn’t explain much. Why is this bad? Are there times where it’s not bad, and if so, how can you tell the difference? Why and how does it happen?

Let’s talk about it.

Originally I was going to call them headmate princesses, but that just seemed misleading. )

Hey guys, Sylvans System wrote a big critique on the book the Haunted Self, by Van Hart, Nijenhuis, and Steele!  I haven't had a chance to read the book yet (and everything I've heard says that I will find it a miserable slog), but if you're curious about it and how it frames medical multiplicity, might be worth a read!

EDIT: I realized I never gave the definition of endogenic, and am so embarrassed!  An "endogenic multiple" is a system who sees their multiplicity as inborn, rather than coming from other sources. ^_^ Also, the Trash Can Collective told us their system name had changed and we've updated this post accordingly.

EDIT AGAIN: Trash Can Collective is now the Lunastus Collective and we've re-updated the post.

Hi everybody, it's Sneak again, and I am on a plural history Wiki roll! ^_^ Today I learned when and how the word "endogenic" got created! :D Coincidentally, it's also right around the same time as the first citation I can find for the urban legend of "'multiple' and 'system' are DID-only words and other plurals aren't allowed to use them"! Score!

Seeing how the "endogenic" term got created to try and be a completely separate form of language from all existing plural terminology at the time to avoid spurious claims of "cultural appropriation," only to then be claimed as cultural appropriation anyway, I think this helps prove just how bad-faith the original argument is.  DID plurals, we can do better!  We SHOULD do better!

Hi guys! While digging around for info for the plural history wiki, I discovered a surprising bit about how the term "median" was coined, and what it was used for! It's intertwined with the history of a plural group called Pavilion Hall--ostensibly it was a plural activist group, but it never really did anything. <_< Zyfron and us used to make jokes about it.

That was about ten years ago, but a little while ago, I found out that Pavilion Hall hadn't done much of ANYTHING after its first six months in existence... back in 2002! And even those first six months didn't really get a lot done! It was like a Potemkin activist group! It was so weird!

The only thing Pavilion Hall ever seemed to achieve wasn't activism at all; it was coining the term "median," and even that was kind of mean and gross! So I thought this was a weird bit of plural history trivia worth talking about!Let's goooooo! Oh gosh this is long. )

So, it turns out HMS_Beagles, who haven't been around since 2011, still had their email account up all this time.  People were sending them emails about adding sites to the healthymultiplicity.com list as late as 2015!  Which is embarrassing; I had no idea. (And even then, it never would've occurred to me I could or should access their account.)

Before I delete the account, I've been manually wading through all the spam and sending messages informing everyone that Beagles is gone, the listing is gone, and for all other inquiries, they should email us instead.

But in the process, conveniently, I happen to get a hard citation for the creation of the multiplicity symbol--you know, the one with the interlocking circles?  People on tumblr are apparently claiming it's a DID-only symbol now, and here's hard proof that it's not, because the creator, ouregaiya, emailed it to Beagles when they created it in October 2011.  Ouregaiya are still active, and about as hardcore as it's possible to be, as far as medicalization of DID goes; their site reads, "Multiplicity is not an illness or disorder."

A screencap, for evidence:Cut to avoid spam. )
lb_lee: M.D. making a shocked, confused face (serious thought)
Okay, the earliest citation I can personally find for the whole "'multiple' is a DID-only word and everyone else is appropriating" myth is August 7, 2014, from an ask I got on tumblr from someone going by not-your-fucking-pet.  The original messages appear to have long since been deleted, so I don't know if it came from a named user or an Anon.

So the myth is longer lived than I thought, but still brand spanking new.  And I think it was the first time I encountered it at all, since I seem kinda mystified in the answer, rather than, "GOD THIS AGAIN."

(EDIT 7/22/2022: I have edited this entry because I considered debating whether plural culture exists as pointless hairsplitting. I also added new information from the BBS days. Apparently people still need this post, so it remains.)

There is a chestnut of misinformation on tumblr claiming that 'system' is a term made by DID folks, for DID folks, and nobody else is allowed to use it.  This is often wrapped up in the idea that multiplicity is owned by people with DID/DDNOS/OSDD, and anyone else claiming it is appropriating.  This is utter nonsense.  I've written numerous posts on this before, but here is the more thorough breakdown, first focused on the politics of this statement, and then the history of the actual usage.

The Politics: why this argument doesn't make sense, even under its own logic. )

The Facts: twenty-plus years of non-DID multiples using 'system.' )

Okay, there’s this idea I’ve seen around tumblr, so let’s get this out of the way: ‘multiple’ is not a word you can appropriate from people with DID/MPD/DDNOS.

Lately, I’ve been reading some really good things on the specifics of abuse regarding LGBT people, where abusers take advantage of someone’s LGBT status (be it their victim’s or their own) as a tool to help them abuse. This has gotten me thinking about abusive systems I’ve known in the past, and so I’m going to talk about how people can use multi as a tool of abuse—on both perp and vic side.
