This tape (05-834-93) comes from the 5th east regional Conference on Abuse and Multiple Personality: Training and Treatment June 3-8, 1993 at the Radisson Hotel in Alexandria, VA. It was mercifully normal and boring! It is also not really my wheelhouse, so once I digitize it, I'm happy to give it to someone who'd appreciate it more; I know there are some van der Kolk fans on this blog. Let me know!

Also keep in mind I'm inking comics when I'm listening to these tapes, so my notes tend to be haphazard. When in doubt, assume the problem was me, not the speaker!

Rogan: So, those cursed tapes. I'm positive some of you are like, "Rogan, why are you doing this to yourself?" Well, for years, I've wanted to do a big thing on the whole ritual abuse/RAMCOA/OEA culture/identity and multi, because it's still relevant and important (and frankly scary). There were at least two plurals I considered friends once who went down that rabbit hole, with awful consequences, so it's personal. I want to understand what happened to them and why... and because I'd prefer to do it without rabbitholing myself, I turn to older records from the past.

Back from the con! It went well! We are very tired but want to upload the notes of Tape #2: "Treatment of Adult RA Survivors," from the 3rd Annual Orange County Conference on Multiple Personality and Dissociation, Hypnosis, and other Strategies, 1990. Hope y'all got your shit-wading boots!

Mori: listened to a second tape. Hoo boy was it a DOOZY. Enough so that no way am I uploading those notes tonight! It started out nice and boring... and then the second presenter came on and that train just done leapt ROARING off the track, making for the end of the earth like its ass was on fire. Damn!

Well, I have lots of new research to pursue because now I know where that whole dead cat nightmare of 2021 got its roots.

Also it looks like we have a tape of THIS disaster, transcribed here: http://whale.to/b/greenbaum.html (do not go to whale.to, it’s another Qanon conspiracy flat earth crackpot website. Oh god why.)

BUT NOT TODAY SATAN(ic cults). Time to relax with some nice lesbian vampire fiction instead!

Mori: Okay, so apparently we CAN absorb information through audio... as long as the INTERNET isn't involved with it, a blazing distraction of "CLICK ME CHECK ME MULTITASK BADLY!" So putting on a cursed tape with which to time our work shifts of spot-blacking and page-formatting Xenogals Ashcan works out really well! And we took NOTES! :D Which we are posting here for our own convenience.

The first tape we listened to was the one labeled 3-D “Ritual Abuse: Evaluation & Treatment Strategies for Children and Adolescents,” by Kimball Ladien, M.D., at the Believe the Children First Annual Conference. After having listened to the whole thing, I STILL don't know what year it was made, only that it was probably before 1990, because it mentioned the McMartin preschool case positively. The conference took place in Illinois, probably Chicago, and it mostly seemed to be Illinois people.

We just received a collection of truly cursed audio cassette tapes from the Memory Wars—conference panels, it looks like. We plan to digitize them all and upload them to archive.org after checking to insure the audio is still understandable after 35 years, but being hard of hearing, have very little use for the tapes themselves. If you want one of these horrible cursed objects, please let us know!

The tapes’ labels identify them as:
• 3-D “Ritual Abuse: Evaluation & Treatment Strategies for Children and Adolescents,” by Kimball Ladien, M.D., at the Believe the Children First Annual Conference
• IVe-383-87 Conversation Hour - Child Abuse and Dissociation (“Summit” added in handwriting; maybe from 1987?)
• C153-20 Treatment of Adult Ritual Abuse Survivors
• 15-234-85 Child Abuse and Dissociation (maybe from 1985?)
• 05-834-93 Psychobiology of Trauma: Current Advances in Research... (by) Bessel A. van der Kolk, M.D. (maybe from 1993?)
• Id-383-87 Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Dissociation (maybe from 1987?)
• (handwritten label) Cory Don Hammond - Dr. Green 4th 1992 Conference (side A) C. Hammond on Dr. Greenbaum (side B)
• (handwritten label) C153-21 The Use of Play Therapy with Child & Adult Survivors of Ritual Abuse: V. Graham-Costain Orange CA 1990
• (handwritten label) Seventh Child Abuse Symposium ‘Cults’- Ritualistic Child Abuse 1986 San Jose CA Meeting Lt. Brad Darling, Kern, Co, Co. (two tapes, labeled in such a way that possibly there’s a missing third)

All things in parentheses are my notes. I have no other info about these tapes at this time, and likely won’t til after con this weekend.

Rogan: Okay, so, in the "Summary of Legal Survey Data from the False Memory Syndrome Foundation" paper we talked about, we came across this contorted sentence:

"The most dramatic toll on families queried by the Legal Survey is loss of contact with children and grandchildren, loss of consort by non-accused husbands of wives who are developing images of parental child abuse, loss of privacy, injury to reputation, increased health problems and marital stress." (4)

Mori asked what the fuck "loss of consort by non-accused husbands of wives who are developing images of parental child abuse" meant. I replied that it sounded like "women dealing with memories of being abused don't want to fuck their husbands and that's so hard FOR THE HUSBANDS," but that sounded so over-the-top evil that even I couldn't believe the FMSF would say it.

Readers, I checked, and that's EXACTLY what it means. But why is this bad?

We've now reached a point in history where we meet younger multiples who've never heard of the False Memory Syndrome Foundation, or the Memory Wars, and writing the whole thing up requires a lot of soul-crushing research.

However, we found this short article from 1996 that summarizes some of it pretty well!

Apparently the False Memory Syndrome Foundation have their entire newsletter archive up online, in both HTML and PDF form.  Man, is it dull to look at, visually.  Took them six years just to get a logo.

Pervocracy has a cool Twitter thread about "anti-meditation."

I am up to my eyeballs in old plural pissing contests of yore and I am so tired but at least I finished my stuff.

Today I fell down an Internet rabbit hole of articles and research on trauma, memory, and dissociative amnesia.  And I'm kinda pissed.  Until very recently, I thought that recovered memories were inaccurate, rare, and that there was no research supporting them.  It turns out all that was False Memory Syndrome Foundation and assorted other miscreants' propaganda.  It's hard to fine (because of the sheer amount of shit and spin thrown out), but it exists!

The Recovered Memory Project, by Brown University.  Started because of a TV show claiming there was no case of recovered memories being corroborated, and an undergrad at Brown quickly found there was... just by searching for a few hours in databases.  This site racks up a ton of instances of memories being corroborated, in court and out of it.

Trauma & Memory, by the The Leadership Council on Child Abuse & Interpersonal Violence.  They're the source of that glorious FMSF debunking I found a while back, but it turns out they're a goldmine of links to other research the FSMF, Parental Alienation Syndrome, and the creepy assholes involved in pushing such ideas.

Consider This, Skeptics of Recovered Memory, by Ross E. Cheit. (I can't find a free full copy online, and DESPERATELY want one.) An incredibly snarky takedown of Loftus and the philosophy of False Memory Syndrome.  Turns out he also was someone whose recovered memories were corroborated by fellow victims.

Crook, L. (1995). Letter from Lynn Crook. Journal of Child Sexual Abuse, Vol. 4(2), 115-118. [personal profile] ljwrites , this might be of particular interest to you, since I know you're in the law field!  One woman who's recovered memory testimony was corroborated and led to her father being found guilty was astounded to find she'd been used as a case study in a False Memory Syndrome book, claiming that her life was ruined by the court case and it was all made up.  She sent a letter to a scientific journal pointing out just how many times her story was misrepresented and fabricated, all while the book's writer claimed that her memory was doing just that!  Bonus attempts by the person she lambasts to force her into a Satanic Ritual Abuse mold.

I'm sure there'll be more, and I'll probably update this post a few times.  Right now, I'm just still kind of floored that fifteen years of researching multi shit, and only NOW am I finally finding all this.
