The night of Vandorsky’s birthday, I arrived at at midnight sharp. The little purple study light was on in her window, a signal that her parents (who thought me a “bad influence”) were in bed and it was safe to approach. Good thing too; the weather had taken a sharp turn for the ugly.

Arizona isn’t know for its rainfall, and Vago (including the “nicer” suburb Vandorsky lived in) was no exception. But once a year or so, the weather decided to make up for lost time and dump a hellraiser on our heads. By the time I’d climbed the fence to Vandorsky’s window, it was roaring outside and I was soaked through.

She hauled her window open, whispered, “it’s an omen!” and pulled me inside. (She didn’t need to whisper. In that storm, I could’ve slaughtered a pig on her lawn without anyone noticing.)

Gilded

Bob has a lot of things, and he doesn’t like getting rid of any of them. He’s only been in Vago a short while, but he has twice Grey’s possessions and seems incapable of paring them down. At first, he tries to hide what he’s doing, but finally, he asks her for help. “You’re always so organized… and I don’t want to have to rent a truck the size of the last one.”

His expression is ginger. He’s trying to let her down easy, remind her that he’s planning to leave, move back to the east coast. But he’s never hidden that from her, so it doesn’t bother her to say yes.

The Morning After

Sorry it’s so short guys; under normal circumstances I’d give a bonus, but to be fair, Red Roses Old Horses was quite long and also… it’s been a steamroller of a couple months. I am flattened. Sorry. Hopefully next month is less brutal.


When Grey wakes up the morning of February 15th, it’s been too long since her last dose of painkillers and moving to get more sounds worse than trying to go back to sleep. What was she thinking? Vicodin or no Vicodin, in this condition, she never should’ve considered fooling around—

Golem Girl

Summary: As a little girl, Grey sees an old silent film that makes her realize exactly what kind of woman she wants to become. Unfortunately, it's not the right kind.

Notes: The movie being mentioned, the Golem: How He Came Into The World, is a classic of silent horror film from 1920 and thus is in the public domain. You can watch it here, and the golem looks like this. Content warning for implied child abuse.

When Grey is little, she sees an old silent movie called der Golem on dollar day at the drive-in theater, which is owned by a friend of her father’s.
The film is faded and flickery, parts seem to be missing, and all the text is in German, but none of that matters, because in a silent movie, nobody talks. What’s more, when the golem appears, Grey’s riveted. She’s too young to know what that leap in her heart means, but when she sees the golem’s hair and dress, her strength to hold up a collapsing ceiling, she knows that’s who she wants to be. She wants to be the girl who can save everyone. She wants to be a woman who can hold up the world.

Summary: Biff and M.D. meet in a PIN holding cell.

Notes: This story was the winner of this month’s Patreon poll. It takes place not long after the end of Found Wanting and Born Lucky (the latter of which I've revised, since it was from the old Male!Grey days) and immediately after Calls With Vandorsky: Goodbye. Finally, these jerks get to meet in story, which is appropriate, seeing as it's our Biff's birthday. Happy birthday, angel!


Biff had been in his cell just long enough to realize he wasn’t getting out alone when the suits gave him a roommate. Lucky him.
