(Originally told this to [personal profile] storyheight but the idea was so cool I decided to blog it)

For many years, we have played hack, AKA hack103, an ASCII adventure game from 1985 and the predecessor of nethack. It specializes in killing you in absurd, improbable ways. And a couple nights ago, we dreamed that it had introduced sanity effects!

You’d sometimes pick up items with totally nonsensical names (like "Jacob" and "witch-hunter") and you could only figure out what they truly were by trying all sorts of actions until either something worked (allowing you to identify at least its type) or the item disappeared, proving it never existed to begin with. (The dream didn’t go into this, but since hack has a limited number of item slots, having inventory bloated with possibly hallucinatory objects would eventually become a pain! Especially if they were cursed and why WOULDN’T they be?)

You would also sometimes get random unpleasant status messages: "Blood." "You hear screaming." "You are crying." Did they do anything? Dunno! But they could stack with other status effects, like blindness or confusion. (The dream did not do this, but erasing your stats from view or intentionally having them report wrong could also apply.)

Finally, you would be pursued by a large cloud of ASCII symbols that made no sense for the area--random doors and tunnels in the middle of a room, worm segments missing a worm, characters not used in the game at all like the degree symbol--which did not move quickly (you could stay ahead of it pretty easily) but was large and relentless and would increase bad sanity effects if it managed to touch you.

It was pretty creepy and effective, for an ASCII game!

Mori: In these trying times, we have focused on the important things: making our first animated GIF of ig/noble Hack103 deaths. We been saving screencaps of the impressive ones a while, might as well icon ‘em! (Will upload them when home.)

yet another stupid death )

Rogan: At [community profile] otherkinnews, Orion Scribner has been giving thorough explanations of anti-otherkin bills that have been coming up in state governments over the past couple years, all based around a conservative boogeyman myth of otherkin children demanding to use litterboxes at schools. Here's a write-up of the most recent bill, in Oklahoma. Seems relevant to readers here.

I can't believe I have to use my "politics" tag for THIS dog and pony show BUT WELCOME TO AMERICA.

Also, the IRS has released DirectFile! I can't use it, because self-employment always makes taxes more complicated, but for those of you who get W-2s and such, check it out!

Mori: We have also installed hack on our Linux machine. Finally, I can go back to dying in improbable foolish ways like the command line intended!

Mac: And now I own a racy Gaston drink coaster. Because no... one...
Boasts like Gaston,
Pounds down toasts like Gaston,
And falls flat under drinks and then coasts like Gaston!

The Binding of Isaac: Redemption
Summary: It doesn't have to end this way. (Spoilers for Rebirth, Afterbirth, Antibirth, and Repentance.)
Word Count: 2800
Notes: This story contains grim content at a similar level to the Binding of Isaac games. It contains spoilers for all endings, especially that of Repentance. This story builds off the theories espoused here, here, and here, combined with my own ideas that Isaac is plural, all playable characters are headmates, and all playable game content takes place in their headspace, with the exception of certain endings. (More on that in the comments.) The Binding of Isaac originally came out in 2011, and people have played it throughout, so it seems appropriate that the game (and thus, this story) would end ten years later. That would make Isaac roughly fifteen.

Are you sure this is how you want this story to end, Isaac? You're the one writing it; it doesn't have to end this way. )

A while ago, a friend gave us a copy of Celeste, a platformer game that's ostensibly about climbing a mountain but really about dealing with your own mind.  The rest of the game contains spoilers, so the very short version is: if you are an obsessive platformer like us who takes immense personal satisfaction in getting from Point A to Point B, then this game is for you.  It is hard and it is good, and music and visuals are both great.  It's worth your money.

Hey, kid, wanna climb a mountain? )

This game is a delight.  I am so glad we got it.
