Rawlin: A little past midnight, on October 15, 2025, I did it. I made it to level 40 (Hell) safely, tamed the Hell Hound with treats (Mori: didn’t know you could do that! We didn’t have to fight him at all, renamed him Good Hellhound) and when the Wizard of Yendor made himself invisible and began teleporting through levels, I decided to hell with it and used my painfully obtained wand of wishing to wish for a dead floating eye (Mori: didn’t know you could safely do that either), ate it, and then wished for three potions of blindness. After that, I quaffed both it and a potion of speed, and one or two hits at a time, I whittled him down and finally defeated him.

I used my final wish for three tripe rations, whereupon I climbed up through the dungeons until I returned to Level 9, where I had left my original pet dog for safekeeping. (It is impossible in hack103 for your dog to follow you all the way to Hell and back.) once little, the dog was now large and feral. I gave my dog treats and then we went home together, one level at a time.

I am pleased at my win.

Mori: by the end of the game, dragons were RUNNING from her! Didn’t know that was possible either! Good game, sugarcane.

There are certain obsessions that I am always on the precipice of, and getting back into NetHack is frequently one of them. This post feels very very good, thank you and congrats on an amazing run!

Mori: We been playing this game off and on for thirty years, and we've beaten it THREE TIMES. (Not counting Bob, who's won as all classes on his own time before coming here because he's OLD and had EXTRA TIME.)

So far, I ain't won it once. It's all Rogan and Rawlin so far.

(I'd love to hear how Dead Floating Eye and Potion of Blindness helped you track the teleport-fleeing wizard, but it feels like it'd be an involved explanation, so we can talk about it some time :) )

but yeah the number of "I didn't know you could do that!"-s I heard from Mori means I know how much of a big frickin deal even the tricks along the way were :)

Mori: Floating eyes are monsters where, if you eat them, they make you telepathic--which, in the game, means that you see ALL monsters anywhere on the level... but only when you are blind. This includes invisible monsters.

Another thing she could've done was wish for a ring of see invisible, but that still only works for monsters within eyeshot, as far as I recall, and that asshole Yendor could've been ANYWHERE in the level, so it was easier to just eat the eye, chug the potion, and then teleport on command (with a ring of teleport control) to get right up in his business and smack him around a couple times before he disappeared.

It's a good thing she had a bunch of food; that's hungry work!

Something quite poetic about fighting your way into hell, winning, going back for your dog and going home. There's a hero's journey all wrapped up there. If you ever drew a comic of it, we'd absolutely read it!

Mori: In a way, it really worked out! Rawlin in real life also has a mondo strength stat but is way better known as "the super-wizard" in here than for combat. And she ran into a couple of my ghosts, one of which burned to death in fire! (Ghosts can die in Hack103, though it's usually REALLY HARD to do so just because you barely ever hit them.) At least my ghost gave her good stuff, including gamewinning stuff! (Pretty sure her ring of teleport control came from my corpse. HELPING MY GIRLFRIEND EVEN IN DEATH!)
