Mori: So, my headmate Rogan grew wings at the start of this year, and he's been indignant about it ever since. At the very end of August, they gruesomely abscessed, rendering him a human pancake for weeks on end, and we didn't mention it in public because why would we? But now he's recovered enough (though still not capable of walking or standing) that I feel okay posting sketches of it. Compare and contrast with how they were previously.

No alt-text surprises!
The injuries. Click to make them bigger, ain't nobody need to see that if they don't want to.

No alt-text surprises!
The bone shards I pulled out of them. Ditto.

Pencil sketch of Sneak flying Rogan's gurney over zer head so he can pretend he's flying while being unable to move. Both zer and him are going NYOOOOM!
When Rogan was finally well enough to do any movement, we got him an adjustable, crankable gurney. Everyone always thinks Sneak is tiny and scrawny, but ze is not. Ze is Amazon giantess.

Ink drawing of Rogan, pancaked on his gurney, extending his wing over Mori sitting on the ground so she doesn't get rained on.
Umbrella Rogan.

ink sketch of Rogan's wings retracted under his back, leaving it lumpily weird, with huge scars. The wing bone contuors are just visible through the skin of his back. When he stretches them underneath, it looks really icky and painful, but it doesn't hurt him at all!
Rogan with his wings retracted. The scars are way more obvious when he does this. HOW DO YOU DO FELLOW HUMANS I TOO AM HUMAN.

ink sketches of Rogan with itty bitty baby wings in 2004, and his current self. Of the current self sketches, two are while he's completely pancaked, stuck using his wings for gesturing or grabbing for things. There's also another of him standing up so as to show the wing membranes extending down past his knees, forcing him to wear loose overalls with accordion pleats at the hips so as to pull in the membranes without squishing them uncomfortably.
Rogan's wings used to be a lot smaller (back when he still had them at all). At least healing from those abscesses meant his left wing now has full range of motion, and both are more dexterous now.

More ink sketches of Rogan now, all standing up even though he can't yet. In two, he's naked, back to the camera, with wings shut and open so as to show how big and silhouette-changing they are; he basically can't wear pants now with his wings out. There are also sketches of him attempting to wear a shin-length dresslike thing that's open down the sides, only to make Rogan go noooo people can see my butt! There's also a doodle of the mostly-backless wheelchair we've been pushing him around headspace in, the past week or two.
He's going to have to ask Sneak to completely remake his wardrobe. Now we know why winged people on TV always have the membranes nice and short; you can't wear JACK with them long. He's working on being able to furl the membranes a bit so at least they won't drag on the ground so much if he tries crawling with them. We still doubt his heavy ass will ever fly.

Oh no, feel better soon Rogan! D: That seems like such a hassle and way more trouble than they're worth, and that was before they made you sick.

Does it pose problems for the vessel, too? It looks like you're able to front for tasks like typing.

glad Rogan's continuing to feel better! And that Sneak is on the wardrobe problem.

The problem of "bipedal humanoid: wing membrane vs clothing" reminded me of some early-RPG alien monkey-flying-squirrel type creatures i remembered seeing a year or two ago. I remembered it because they handled that membrane problem with an approach that seemed to shout, "we're illustrators, not biologists -- we're paid to make things look cool, not make sense!"

So I found it again and may I present to y'all, from the early days of TSR's Star Frontier RPG (originally published in the early '80s, just a few years after original DnD): the Yazirian alien species.. where the 'flying squirrel' wing membrane just fastens here and there (presumably just to keep up appearances) :)

oh my goodness, a Snuggy that's elastic enough you can wing-flex under it could be amazing!

and yeah, the Yazirian's gear is not a bad look! (I never figured out how those garments were supposed to get on and off [other than 'slowly'], but I guess it would involve snaps/buttons). I guess we can all rest assured: if any of life's problems have solutions buried in early '80s TSR publications, i'm on it! :)

These are great sketches- and ouch, no wonder Rogan's been pancaked. Also explains why clothing has been so tricky. Kind of hard to just punch a hole or slit when they're attached a ways down. What are the wardrobe ideas?

Please tell me there's been at least one instance of pushing the gurney at full speed down a hallway or something similar.

I'll admit we thought Sneak was small as well- consider that corrected! I wonder why that's such a common assumption.

Sneak got that Pippy Longstocking energy and I'm here for it n_n

Oh dang membrane going down to the legs. That certainly is more sensible for stability but yeah, not great for attire. Options are either the sort of smock he's in there, or using something akin to spirit gum on key places on the body but that iiiisss not ideal. (I've got characters with wings that got cosmetic membrane piercings to allow a band around the waist for fashion reasons but considering the injury and healing, I don't think that'd be good idea at this stage)

Woah, that sounds like a lot to deal with! And it would make clothes way more complicated. But the costumer in me is getting ideas. (And the body horror stuff sounds rough, I hope the troublesome aspects of this become more manageable soon!)

So, ages ago, I started to work on what it might take to costume bat winged people. It took the form of a lot of laced garments, stuff with closures that could lace or zip or otherwise accommodate wings. I wish I could draw better than I can.

Well, that's a thing that happens!

(I genuinely never think about the sizes of headmates fdjkgh but if had to have guessed, i would have assumed sneak was smaller).

But whoa--wings. It sounds like a real pain to be reduced to a winged pancake, not to mention the whole issue of clothing.

That said, i imagine that once the wings are done growing and suitable clothes are made though, the wings will be a cool thing to have, even if flying may not be possible.

Who needs flight when you have blanket wings?

Poor Rogan - how dare people see your butt!
