We’re thrilled to report that on Wednesday, June 10, An Act Regarding Free Expression was overwhelmingly passed in the Massachusetts House, with 151 votes in favor and only 3 against!

We’re thankful to the bill’s House sponsors, Representative John Moran and Representative Adam Scanlon, for their commitment to the freedom to read. We’re also grateful for everyone who is part of the Massachusetts Freedom to Read Coalition, including librarians, teachers, authors, illustrators, students, publishers, booksellers, and parents who have been united in this fight.

And we especially want to thank you for writing to your representatives many times – via email and through postcards – to urge them to pass this bill. This has truly been a team effort.

But we’re not quite finished.

Next, the House bill will need to be reconciled with the Senate bill via conference committee. The two bills are nearly identical but differ in one key element: the Senate bill included protections for authors, whereas the House bill did not. We have every hope that once the differences are reconciled, the final bill will include protections for authors. Then, the final version will be sent to Governor Maura Healey for her signature.

So stay tuned: We will let you know if we need all hands on deck one more time to contact your elected officials and usher this bill into law.

Meanwhile, take a moment to celebrate! Getting An Act Regarding Free Expression passed in both the Massachusetts Senate and the House is a huge victory for the freedom to read and for freedom of expression.

What a great way to celebrate Pride month! 🎉
