Rawlin: So... I'm a girl. For now. I'm going by she/her.

Okay, that's it. *flees*

Mori: GOOD JOB, SUGARCANE! YOU SOCIALED SO GOOD! *thumbs up*

Anyway, even though sewing is not my strength, I'm thinking of making her a chiton to wear. It looks so easy, even I probably can't fuck it up irrevocably, and Biff can sew, so I'm sure if he coaches (harangues) me, I can get through it. Since it hangs entirely from the shoulders, it wouldn't squish her fur to her body, and it's super breathable so she won't overheat!

Also I think she'll look cute in one. (I don't like looking cute or pretty myself, but I like it when she does, because she lights up like a sunbeam any time I tell her.)

I can probably just find some old sheet at the Goodwill or something. Then she'll have something in the vessel world too, if she wants. (I mean, she has black trunks and a sports bra now, but if she wanted something else.)

Pronouns-as-representations-of-gender is kind of a baked-in feature of the English language, I don't think that's a problem we're gonna get around any time soon.

In a better world you'd share them just as a practical thing, so people know what to call you -- same as telling people your name -- and nobody would make a big deal about it beyond that. Sadly, we live in a world where a lot of people will insist on fighting you about it :/

Seconding the recommendation for linen, but that may be pricey in the vessel world. Super-loose inexpensive dresses are a thing, though.

True! That sounds like great fun, whimsical sheets hadn't even occurred to me.

Chitons and T-tunics tend to be beginner SCA garb, but I haven't gone to any SCA events since 2000 so I don't know if that's still true.

Suspicion confirmed! Also, you were very brave, well done!

Congrats on the gender! Also, called it a little :P

We've made a chiton before. It's super easy, as is anything roman, and they look fabulous. -Lani (she/her)

So I honestly wouldn't bother pinning at all. If you can make a stitch or two where you want to cloth to meet, you can make sure it fits before making the real for serious stitch to attach it and make it pretty. The non-for serious stitch can be cut and pulled out after if it becomes a problem. We handstitched everything on ours. -Luna

Oh, that tutorial does look easy. Our Aisha or Wizard might like wearing a chiton or similar Greek/Roman clothes.

Congratulations! Good luck with the chiton adventures. Nice consonance with my meatspace life; now that I'm attending PFLAG meetings locally, I'm running into more people who are coming into queerness for themselves.

Lmao, no not yet. Got a locked entry musing about it but hadn't figured out perms at the time. Our local PFLAG chapter also holds general meetings once a month in addition to the parental one.

I'm only a parent in that I'm essentially reparenting our roommate with my wife, and also in that I've been assigned "server dad" multiple times by people older than me. Suppose that means I'll be prepared once it does happen 😆

Congrats, Rawlin!

Mori- I've been looking for the name of that garment for so long. Thank you for inadvertedly solving that. I now also want to make a chiton with that tutorial.
