Mori: Oh thank goodness the sci-fi library has declared today a "no kvetching about anything but the books" day, so we can catalog in peace. I enforce order upon the paper rectangles, and hereby find peace and control in a universe of chaos and entropy.

Rawlin grabbed three Piers Anthony books from the buck-a book box and (when I whined) sensibly pointed out that if we don't grab them here, we'll have to find them somewhere else, and at least this way, our money goes to our friendly local sci-fi library. We also chased down a weird title of our youth among the stacks and found a copy of Melissa Scott's Shadow Man, which wolffyluna posted about and made us want to try it, so we aren't ENTIRELY reading dense nonfiction or crappy old Anthony.

I was given the first three Xanth books as a teenager and read through them once, not noticing in the moment anything particularly uncomfortable about them. Much later after I had encountered others' opinions of Xanth, I thought back on it and realized that the fact that I never reread them (despite rereading *everything*) and never sought out more (despite being a completionist) was indicative.

If you do like the Melissa Scott, her "Roads of Heaven" trilogy is amazing, featuring space travel run by alchemy (with pitch pipes as an essential engineer's tool), polyamorous marriage, and fighting to stay a space pilot as a woman in a misogynist galaxy.

Mori: trust me, Xanth started mediocre and just got worse and worse from there. Piers Anthony owned our childhood so we kinda have to reread a bunch of his stuff for records purposes, and it’s a weird mix of nostalgia and revulsion.

There’s a reason we have the “oh piers anthony no” tag, even if it’s mostly locked.

There’s a lot of Scott at the sf library! Excited to see if we like her.

Thanks for the rec, though! We mostly read nonfiction these days, or fiction for records/pluralstories purposes. It’ll be nice to try something for pleasure!

I checked their blog, just in case there was a wild coincidence and someone else had feelings about this obscure book at the same time I did...no such luck! (But it looks like they post a lot more book reviews than I do, which probably explains the mix-up, heh.)

Shadow Man sounds very interesting! though i have not read it and thus cannot recommend it ;P I'll put it on my tbr list.
