The Crazy Boys Series
Apr. 21st, 2026 08:09 amRogan: two years ago, I got hit with a six-month period of memory work unprecedented in the ten years we’d been doing it. Before, we averaged an episode maybe once every four to five days, but from March through September 2024, I averaged one a day. That six month period alone had more episodes than all but our (til then) highest episode year, 2020, and obviously 2024 as a whole blew it out of the water. I joke that I spent those six months crying on the floor, and that’s an exaggeration but not untrue.
However, these memories were different from the rest: they were about someone who helped. His name (for purposes of this project) was D.
D was a high school friend who, at substantial risk and cost to himself, helped us in general and me in particular survive to high school graduation. He was the most emotionally astute, socially gifted chameleon we have ever met, and that’s why he realized what was happening to us and did something about it. He had little and he gave all. You've already seen a couple of his exploits, in Crazy Boys Get Money and Embry, Olly, and Ziggy.
I needed to tell the story of this unsung forgotten hero of my past. I needed people to know the amazing things he did and immortalize those acts, as best I could, in art. I penciled something like a hundred comics pages in a fury, AllFam style. I was unable to keep the pace, due to the steamrolling death march the episodes demanded, but those pages were good. I wanted to do more with the project and planned it to be my next big comic.
But then things got real bad politically. I feel even more pressure to tell this story, in case something happens to me, but I don’t feel I can share or sell this comic without risking something happening to HIM. Due to circumstances I won’t discuss here, I can’t ask and get consent from D himself, which means I have to anonymize him damn well, and comics are kinda hard to do that with.
Writing, on the other hand, is easy. And so I’m making Crazy Boys.
During what we now call “the steamroller”, I filled something like five journals with the memories dragging me. I then typed them up and put them in chronological order as best I could. Combined with the journals we kept in high school, of interactions we had with D at the time, these create the bulk of the records I rely on to write Crazy Boys. A lot of it is going to basically be those journals, edited.
I hope that y'all will enjoy and take interest in this new series. People responded to Crazy Boys Get Money positively, enough to make me give it a try.
See y’all at the polls.
