Doing these together because their histories and citations are identical.
tai'morende (noun)
Meaning: 1: originally intended to be “an alternative version of [a] character's entire world inside your head” (Eclective, 2002), but due to misunderstanding apparently became 2: a fictional character who takes on an independent life, but who doesn’t stick around for long (ibid).
dar'morende (noun)
Meaning: 1: original meaning: same as soulbond. Due to misunderstanding, it became 2: a fictional character who takes on an independent life to their creator or audience and sticks around.
Coiner: soulbonder Catherine Rain (Eclective’s 2004 glossary) on the soulbonders' Just For Writers (JFW) AOL mailing list (Eclective 2002).
When: by 1999-9-17 (Lyn)
Where: Soulbonding term, never went further.
Rise and Fall: Though apparently they were in “common usage (within the SoulBonding community, at least)” (Eclective, 2002), these terms seem to have almost entirely disappeared from the Internet and were never used on Livejournal at all that I could find. What few usages come from Eclective, except the earliest: Lyn, by 1999-09-17. Lyn says, “Most people have at least one permanent SoulBond, also known as a dar'morende. They stay with you forever after you get them (mine most permanent SB is Jeff, of course). They usually have lots of temporary ones that come and go (like, I once had Riesz but she's gone now..) which I believe are called tar'morende(hey, JFW people, if I'm wrong at this, yell at me, okay?)” (http://web.archive.org/web/19991007144603/http://saucybard.com:80/lyn/sb/main.html)
All the other citations come from Eclective. In 1999, in "do you believe in soulbonding at first sight?" Riesz writes, “I've had a couple of temporary SoulBonds (that's tar'morende, isn't it?” and “the moment you meet the SoulBond who's going to be with you for the rest of your life. (Dar'morende, got it now.)” (1999) On 2002-04-21, they describe the confusion around the terms: “The JFW (Just For Writers, though it's long since ceased to be that - Just For SoulBonders would be more appropriate now, I think ^_^) mailing list/club coined the term SoulBonding, along with a couple of other terms, dar'morende and tai'morende. These terms have passed into common usage (within the SoulBonding community, at least) as meaning a 'permanent' SoulBond and a 'temporary' SoulBond respectively. It turns out that in fact, this isn't the correct usage at all; Catherine Rain, who actually came up with the terms, says that dar'morende was originally intended to refer to a SoulBonded person or character, whereas tai'morende referred to an alternative version of that character's entire world inside your head. However, practically every page on SoulBonding (even this one, until recently) describes the terms as referring to permanent and temporary SBs." By the time of their 2004 glossary, they describe it as “outdated”.
By the time we were on the scene in 2007, the term had faded completely out of use. We'd never seen someone actually use it, and neither had
nightforest, who joined up a little before we did.
TL;DR: The only reason anyone these days knows these terms existed is because of Eclective. I can’t find anyone else using it except Lyn, once; all other citations go to Eclective's 2004 glossary. These term are the least-known a term can be and still justify being in the glossary.
