Rawlin sketch
Mori: Rawlin's appearance has changed pretty drastically in the past few years, so I figured I'd upload some art of him to show the difference!
This was him back in 2020, in full-blown god-eaten mode. There were a lot of visual details we couldn't really make out about him, because he wears all back and wasn't safe to get too close to.

And this is him now:

Pretty stark difference, right? He's lost a lot of weight; those big shoulders look a little awkward on him now. He doesn't have that jaw-straining, teeth-grinding grin anymore either; his affect is pretty flat most of the time, though it's getting a little better as he grows more okay.
Now that I'm up in his business all the time and giving him proper fur care, it's become obvious he has at least three different fur types. There's the thick, fluffy, and glossy (when properly cared for) stuff at his neck, chest, upper back, and shoulders. It grows longer, and far as I can tell, it doesn't get worn off easily by his harness. He trims to get that collar look because apparently left to its own devices it gives him a golden lion tamarin monkey level neckbeard, which he hates. It feels pretty similar to his hair and really benefits from good grooming. It can fluff up when he's cold or nervous, or if he just wants to. (Sneak was delighted to discover this.) Far as I know, he can't voluntarily fluff up any of the rest. It just does what it does, regardless of his input.
Then there's his sorta "default" fur, which feels kinda felty and is maybe 1-2 inches long. It's matte, that sorta charcoal color, and it's what he's mostly got, so we mistook it for his whole coat at the start. Nope! It extends down the backs of his hands, which his gloves usually cover (though the constant friction has worn a good amount of it away.)
And then there's the really fine, soft, short stuff that he seems to only have at his inner upper arms, his sides, inner thighs, and part of his hands. It's lighter, shows more the color of his skin underneath, and feels kinda velvety. He generally won't let you touch it.
He wears his gloves damn near all the time and has for as long as I can remember. I think I'm the only one who's seen him barehanded. He reforms the fingertips (or banishes them entirely) to suit the task at hand; their default state is sorta blunt chisel tips, which I think he uses when climbing or digging. (I remember one time that he caught himself from a fall by clamping those chisels into the stone ledge he was falling from.) What we thought were "claws" were actually glove tips intended for fine object handling; a guy that size needs them to handle small or flat objects. (If you need an example, try to pick a dime off the floor. You used your fingernails, didn't you?)
Now that I'm up close with him more often, it's clear he isn't as human-looking on second glance. That collar takes maintenance, his teeth are sharp (it's especially noticeable at the molars), and though he does have fingernails, they are definitely not the color and shape a human's are, thicker and more clawlike. (I can't believe I'm having to turn to Mac and Mir's cheesy TV show, but Ron Perlman's character in the '80s Beauty and the Beast show is in the right ballpark.) Rawlin's are a sorta yellowish/white all over which really contrasts against his skin tone. He can also shake himself like a dog when wet (something else that totally delighted Sneak when ze found out) and his skin can twitch in independent patches, much like a horse's. I get the sense that he feels pressure to conform to a human look; not sure where he picked that up.
Eventually I'm going to make him a proper icon that better reflects who he is now.

I also don't think I'd really processed just how tall Rawlin is- it's one thing to see numbers and another to see a side-by-side. Can I borrow a few inches of height? :P

(Well, the bony lady always appears just enough taller than you that it's intimidating, but that's her.)

He looks much more pensive, yeah.

(Also had a funny moment when I thought of picking up a dime; usually I get my sticky finger on the flat side to try pulling it and then get the nail/other finger in after it's levered up a touch, but then I also have weirdly sticky sweat TnT)

And yeah, Rawlin went from bad romance novel cover to outdoorsy hiker pretty fast once we got a better look at him. When he explained his wardrobe to me, he was like, “why do you ask?” and I was like, “NO REASON WHATSOEVER.”
Eventually he is sure to find out but no need to hurry that one up.

Missy, from the wrong journal.
