My Immortal is a very famous fic, it’s true, but it’s the exemplar of a genre in existence well before that: badfic. Godawfulfanfiction.net was in existence in 1998, and there were plenty of mockery sites for fanfiction—MSTing, Protectors of the Plot Continuum, stuff like that, all existing before 2006. So while the marvelous cobblestone of My Immortal was not yet placed, its road nonetheless existed!
