A Multiple of Rights, from Mending Ourselves (1993)

Miranda: This comes from page 56 of Mending Ourselves: Expressions of healing & self-integration by the Readers of Many Voices and edited by Lynn Wasnak, published in 1993. I thought it might be interesting as a historical time capsule of multi history and the consideration of rights of alters. (Also, as a side-note, "system" as a standalone term is used throughout the book, so more data points on that particular chain.)

A Multiple of Rights

1. Each self has the right to exist and be recognized.
2. Each self has the right to be listened to by the others.
3. Each self has the right to feel any emotion.
4. Each self has the right to express feelings.
5. Each self has the right to time "out."
6. Each self has the right to disagree with the others or anyone else.
7. Each self has the right to be happy.
8. Each self has the right to have needs and wants respected.
9. Each self has the right to have needs met.
10. Each self has the right to make mistakes.
11. Each self has the right to have a voice in decisions.
12. Each self has the right to be loved.
13. Each child self has the right to be childish.
14. No self has a right to harm any other.

Mostly by Melanie, Duncan, Casey, and L.H., but everybody had input. We are working on a list of responsibilities.

Thanks for sharing this list of rights! While I'm sure they're probably very obvious to a lot of people, I definitely needed to see these reminders.

Might end up getting the book myself, not gonna lie. Is it a good read overall in your opinion?

I would certainly love to have your copy of the book once you're done with it! I'll just have to DM you my new address since it's changed from the last time y'all sent me something (though I'm still in the states). But yeah, it definitely sounds like something I would be interested in reading. I do tend to enjoy poems and drawings, and I would think the other writings from other multiples would be a good read too. :)
