lb_lee: M.D. making a shocked, confused face (serious thought)

it smacks of the desire to have Someone In Charge who is unfailingly loving, and wise, and will take care of it all for you. This angle is seductive, and in my experience, not at all the case.

Mori: You know, I never thought about that, but you're totally right! It also feels super Christian-god to me, and how some folks equate the Divine or Higher Self to that same kind of "unfailingly loving and wise" idea.

It seems like for us, what Schwartz calls the Self is most analagous to what we call "the brain," which in Madgic I depict as the goofy cartoon whale. It's sort of silly in the zine, but in reality it is way more of a chessmaster, and not nearly so huggy-lovey. I mean, the way we grew up, hard choices had to be made, so our brain HAD to make decisions to sacrifice some of us so that the gestalt could continue. It's not clear how separate it is; we just use the brain whale metaphor for convenience. For us, it feels more like an overarching power, the strings we dance on, rather than a hug-mom.

My therapist, annoyingly, keeps asking things like "which ones do you think are the REAL you?"

Ah yes, the classic real vs. not binary, as though it's that simple!
