Yeah, for me canonmate just implies any folks sharing a source material, any given Mario or Luigi, rather than the very specific "you're MY Luigi" that's at work in the bookends.
Like, I've heard a lot of words that come really CLOSE to describing bookends, and are used in the same way, but I wanted to try to find a word that focused less on the "we share a source/canon" and more on the problems of when it goes wrong, and molding of identity to match each other. (Especially since the bookend phenomenon isn't a purely fictive one.)
