The conclusion my corner of Tumblr has come to is that there are a lot of people who got out of their authoritarian upbringings and basically search-replaced "Jesus" with "The Struggle" but did not otherwise do anything to unlearn the actual authoritarian *mindset*. Thus my frequent ranting about how The Revolution is Leftist Rapture.

Actually, if you haven't read Michael Walzer's "Political Action: A Practical Guide to Movement Politics" I highly recommend it. (I'm not entirely finished reading it yet, but it's quite good.) He discusses how you have to keep "militants" (by which means people like that; he specifically references having to keep Trotskyists from taking over something he was doing) from co-opting your movement because they tend to sway it away from actually being effective.
