This is an idea in IFS! No matter how destructive they are, parts are just trying to protect you/other parts/themselves in the only way they know how.

Also glad to hear I wasn't the only one whose depression was entirely situational. My depression disappeared when I transitioned and toxic people disappeared from my life. Imagine that!
