(RECORD SCRATCH) Dominic Deegan??? We read that in high school too, I'd completely forgotten about it! I bought a replica scarf off the author at a convention once! It's been forever. It's kind of cool opening it back up and still being able to recognize the art style when I haven't seen it in like fifteen years probably.
(Timing note: pretty sure we're bodily a few years younger than you guys? Mid-thirties now. So we probably read it around the same time haha.)
