Of course not! Then we'd have to think about all the potential implications for what consciousness is and what identity actually means! Much neater to just find the Big Picture One Self That Conveniently Balances Everyone/Thing.

Yeah! I dk, we spent a lot of our child life having to be a diplomat in a developmentally inappropriate fashion, so I think we particularly bristle at the idea that the "highest" "truest" self is fundamentally an internal caretaker whose job is to "fix" the internal family. I'm sure there are some plural folks to whom that viewpoint makes sense and is helpful, but this one is (I suspect) not nearly as universal as Richard thinks.
