Yeah, I've heard it too, but only in recent years; apparently before that, it was mostly used (rarely) in anthroplogy. I admit, it isn't apparent to me what it means on first glance, and I didn't want to slow the narrative down with an explanation, especially since this story takes place in 2001 and Bob's niecephew at the time is a kid in high school.
