I have seen the worst aspects of this. A system I befriended as a teen was significant others with another system who frequently seemed to acquire their headmates. And this system was awful and abusive and controlling an the situation was just as horrible and toxic as you might expect. Finally my friend(s) was like "eff this, we're leaving."
