I haven't talked about them in depth, since a lot of people have elsewhere, but I certainly know of them, and have at least one friend who knows survivors of there. (They've talked about making their own history of it, I think, and since they're way better equipped and more knowledgeable, I've figured there's not really much for me to do.)
But yeah, it's a REALLY common gambit in media-plural space, and FF7 House is probably the most famous one. (That or Andy Blake, though he didn't publicize the bookend portion of it so much.)

EDIT: Actually, rereading the Blake post, I realize that he seems to be at the very edge of it; Abbey said she was Andy!Elrond's ADOPTED daughter, but it doesn't seem she was given a corresponding Tolkien identity. So it looks like I was wrong on that.
