Very true. I actually borrowed a book from my roommate by Carolyn Gage called
The Spindle and Other Lesbian Fairy Tales
, which revamped Sleeping Beauty into a lesbian play about incest. The "curse of sleep" is intended to be a metaphor for dissociation and trauma reactions, and the "curse" spreads to younger generations as it incapacitates the older ones.
Our issue has never been with our mother being possibly dissociative. I can empathize with that. But that doesn't absolve her, and it CERTAINLY doesn't absolve our father or our aunts and uncles, all of whom were aware of the grandfather's predilections ahead of time.
Incest is not just the evil done by one person; it's the refusal to act by everyone around the perpetrator, or the collusion.
