Hey guys!  I will hopefully be at Pilcon on Saturday, May 6, 2017!  It'll be at 82 Main Street, Peabody MA, at the library!

I admit that my health has not been the best recently, so I might have to cancel, but I am hoping to be there with my stuff!  If I DO cancel, I will let everyone know.  And if not, feel free to come check me out! :)

lb_lee: A short-haired person flexing their muscles and declaring, "Queer trans multi proud!" (pride)
One of the bonuses of my profession is that every independent queer comics creator in the area seems to meet me at some point.  Which means I now have delightful access to some freaking FANTASTIC indy queer comics.  For someone who struggled finding queer material I liked as a teenager, I am in hog heaven.

So, time for a list!  In this case, my favorite indy queer comics. (Excluding porn, which gets its own list.) To simplify things for myself, I'm putting in some provisos: only one title per author, only series that are either complete or which I am sure will finish, only shit I own/read regularly, and only titles that are still legally findable.  Anyway, in no particular order here they are!  I hope other folks enjoy them and check them out!

Whenever ANY issue of access comes into play, INVARIABLY you will have at least one person who points out, “Look, accessibility is hard. It takes a lot of effort. Give the creators a break.”

Sure, it’s hard, but it’s also vital. Accessibility is an imperative part of good design. That this would be even considered a question shows a very flawed idea of what good design IS. The whole point of good design, in my opinion, is wedding aesthetic appeal with functionality. Your product should work as well as possible for as many of your customers as possible, and it should be appealing while it does it. (And when in doubt, function wins out.)

I have passionate feelings about accessibility in design, okay? )

5) How often do your front-runners change/switch out?

Answer away. Pick one question to answer or go for all 5. It's nice to leave a comment so others can read your answers. You may feel free to answer here if you like.

Anyone remember the old LJ comm, multiplemonday?  It would have fun little multi meme questions every Monday.

Since the plural comms on DW are pretty much dead, I was considering reposting some of those old multiplemonday posts, for folks to have fun with.

Would folks be at all interested in that?

The Bionic Prosthetist
Word Count: 2500
Series: Durable Medical Equipment
Summary: Levi Ibrahim makes prosthetics that feel real. Brand Olajuwon is interested, but not as a customer.
Notes: This story was originally written for Pink Narcissus press’s ‘Brave Boy World.’ It didn’t get in, so I cleaned it up, added 500 words, and my Patreon crew picked it up!  Not gonna lie, I hope to make this a new series, so please, let me know if you're interested in seeing more of this!

A bust of Brand Olajuwon in color. He's brown-skinned, freckled, with a scar across his nose and curly, frizzy reddish brown hair. He has a placid, sleepy-eyed smile on his face, but don't fall for it.

Pinoko Prostheses was a cheery shop, for one that sold replacement body parts.

The Magical Girl House
Series: Magical Moonbeams
Word Count: 2600
Summary: Former Moon Princess Marge decides she needs to move out, and that her past history is weighing on her more than expected.
Notes: This story was actually bartered in exchange for [personal profile] nevanna mending my favorite shirt.  It is now good as new and she did a fantastic job!  Hooray for Nevanna!
A black and white portrait of Marge in her work clothes: an apron and a bandanna tied over her hair. Her round, freckled face is equipped with a dead-eyed customer service stare.

Life seemed to have finally settled for Marge, former Moon Princess and current barista. She’d been at Homescross long enough to feel totally at home with her job and her customers. Not only that, but she’d spent enough of her free time wandering around the sprawling patchwork world to feel pretty steady in it.

As an informal roleplaying site, most of Homescross’s activity was done in certain areas: the coffee shop, the high school, the college. (There were also the more fantastic areas, Superburbia or Underhome, but Marge never went there.) Precious few players thought or cared about the infrastructure or manpower needed for these places to exist—where the coffee shop’s coffee came from, where the school personnel got trained. And that was fine. It meant the NPCs of Homescross could get some privacy from readers’ and players’ eyes and go about their ordinary lives in relative peace.

Two things!

First, my story prompt list is mighty bare.  Lately, I've been writing whatever I feel like, and if y'all are okay with that, then awesome!  But I also totally welcome story prompts; I really enjoy the ideas that come my way, and writing other folks' ideas!  So please, if you want to, send me a story prompt here!

And second, Cultiples #2 has run into a snag: it's too long.  WAY too long.  I'm already at over forty pages, and that only covers 1995-2008.  I've still got nine years to go, and 52 pages is the absolute max you can fit into a floppy stapled book.  I'm a little stymied as to what to do--right now, the only options I can think of are:
  • breaking it into two issues
  • make it a book with a spine
  • make it a completely different size/shape
None of these are ideal.  The first would have a very awkward break, the second would interfere with my plans to make the whole Cultiples series in its entirety a perfect-bound book, and the last would just be awkward in its discontinuity.

I suppose I could try doing it as an ebook only?  But that would also be a bit of a pain; I rely on paper sales at events!

I don't know.  I'm open to suggestions, I suppose!

EDIT: hareteeth on tumblr suggested two floppy issues, which I could then package together, in a sleeve or a jacket.  Good idea!  Problem solved.

Hey everybody, it's that time again: time to vote for which story gets the Patreon money this month!

The Magical Girl House has been taken off the roster because I WILL be posting it this month, in exchange for [personal profile] nevanna  mending my favorite shirt and making it good as new again!  So this month will be a two story month.  I've also added a good few stories this month!

As always, anyone can vote, but patrons get double weight for their votes.  If you'd like to be a patron and get bonus content, please consider joining up on Patreon!  And if you want to see the blurbs for any of these stories, those are here!  If you don't have a DW and so can't do the poll, that's okay; just leave your vote in the comments below; anon comments are turned on.

lb_lee: Raige making a horrified face. (D:)

What time is it?  Time for another post about Piers Anthony!  Haven't talked about him in a few years.

Piers Anthony is a speculative fiction writer who OWNED our tiny little geek soul from roughly the ages of 8-14.  I mean, none of our other childhood creators compared.  We owned... *counts* twenty-one of his Xanth books, and at least thirteen from other series, and I don’t even KNOW how many others of his books we read at the library.  God, when I think of the MONEY we blew as kids on that guy...

Creepy pedopologia and horse-sex behind the cut, because Piers Anthony, man. )

We've had some folks come join DW from tumblr or Discord recently, so I thought I'd do a little Dreamwidth 101 post for you guys! :D I hope it helps!

Access, subscriptions, tags, cuts, memories, and communities, oh my! )
lb_lee: M.D. making a shocked, confused face (serious thought)
Due to work engagements, I didn't actually have a chance to thoroughly look over my copies of Cultiples #1 until now.

And this is really bizarre, but... apparently the bold text didn't come through as bold.  It's just... normal.

The ebook shows the bold text.  The original document shows the bold text.  It's ONLY the print PDF, which I didn't think to check, because literally the only thing I do to convert the ebook to print PDF is click a box.  It never occurred to me that bold text just... wouldn't come through, for some reason.

What?  Computer, how?  I'm so confused.

Okay guys, my Livejournal is now officially inactive.  It will be deleted pretty soon.

...of course, now this means there's a bunch of story illustrations that were hosted there that I'm going to have to rehost and relink, but oh well.  I guess that'll be something to work on next.

Raige at ROAR! (the whole thing)
Series: Infinity Smashed
Word Count: 9500
Summary: When Raige gets an opportunity to play at a local marching band festival, he starts having trouble balancing the parts of his life.  Meanwhile, Thomas crams for his GED and M.D. tries to heal.
Notes: This story was sponsored by the Patreon crew!  It takes place in that yawning period between Shades of the Past and the Next Adventure, also during the Enron trials. M.D. is still in pretty intense mental healthcare at this point, and Raige is in his junior year of high school. For all the marching band notes, those are at the bottom.  There are lots.  I am sorry.

I've been reading an enormous comics biography of Osamu Tezuka.  And the more I read, the more I am glad I am not Mr. Tezuka.

Don't get me wrong, he's a master of his craft!  I love his work!  But reading about his work schedule, I am completely unsurprised he dropped dead at sixty.  We like to remember the sheer output he created during his lifetime, but the fact was, that level of output came at a hefty price.  I've read about him working for two and a half days solid, locked in a room, with no sleep.  His editors were usually in there with him.

I mean, yes, sure, he could pound out thirty-two pages in a day with one assistant, and made a ton of money doing it, but there's a reason one of his colleagues, Eiichi Fukui died at 33 from raw overwork.

This biography, I feel like, is a good cure for any jealousy I might've had.

Sorry guys; I misjudged my energy/time, and so I'm running late on the final installment of Raige at ROAR!

I plan to have it posted within the week, and as an apology, there's an extra thousand words added on.  I hope you enjoy it, and thanks for your understanding!

lb_lee: M.D. making a shocked, confused face (serious thought)
Welp, that was a total bust.

The Jerk Bus beat me.  They kept moving too fast, not staying anywhere for long, and spreading misinformation about when and where they'd be, so I couldn't catch up to them.

So now I've got a bunch of resources and nothing to do with them.  You can download the whole load free here, I guess; I'm gonna take it down in a week, because some of it is pirated and I don't want to bilk my own community.  The whole thing contains:

Resources )Man, can't believe I burned all that energy for nothing.  Stupid bus.

lb_lee: M.D. making a shocked, confused face (serious thought)
Oh my god tracking this stupid bus is like chasing Carmen San Diego.

EDIT: annnnnd now the CD burner isn't working.  Apparently it can only do three at a time and then it dies.

This whole thing is turning into a way bigger pain in my ass and chaotic clusterfuck than I anticipated.

Hello everybody!  Over in a group we know, folks were talking about wanting to meet other plurals through Dreamwidth, so we decided to make this post to help people get to know each other.

Please, whether you know us personally or not, feel free to leave a comment saying who you are and what you like to do.  Also, for an ice-breaker question, discuss your favorite adorable lifeform.

I hope I can connect plurals together with other plurals and plural-friendly singlets!  Say hi, folks!
